Tips for a Great Moving Day

Move in day is fast approaching! From arriving on campus and moving in your belongings to meeting your new roommates and spending your first official night in your new city as a first year college student, it’s going to be busy! But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. We want you to enjoy every second of this exciting day so we thought of a few ways to make it run as smoothly as possible.

If you can, arrive the night before

No matter how you spin it, move in day is going to be a long day. Add on a big drive before that, and that’s an even longer day. If you can, it might not hurt to arrive the night before and stay in a hotel. That way, you can get a good nights rest and not be in a big rush the next morning to arrive on campus.

Start packing early

Try not to leave this until the last minute. Moving to college is not like packing for a weekend, or a week. It’s moving to a new city where you will be living for at least the next year. Sure, it’s not like you’ll never be home again and if you do forget something you’ll most likely be able to find it in your new city. But, why not save yourself the hassle and they extra money? Make a list and start packing sooner rather than later.

Pack smart – be organized

It might be tempting to just throw everything you own into garbage bags or cram it all into your parents car but it will save you so much time unpacking if you organize your packing. For example, label your boxes by room or by contents so it’s easy to unpack them in the right spot when you move in. This will make things easy to find the first night in your new place or the first morning you wake up in your new home.

If possible, reach out to your new roommates ahead of time

There are so many new and exciting changes so why not try and get to know the person or people you are going to be experiencing many of these changes ahead of time? Create a social media group or a group chat, try and get to know each other a little before you go from never meeting in person to sharing a living space for the next eight months.

Double check what is allowed and prohibited in your residence BEFORE move in day

This is pretty straight forward, but a reminder never hurts. Don’t be that student who brings in prohibited items such as flame candles. Avoid the hassle and get to know the rules before time. It will make everyone’s day, and year, go much more smoothly.

Check the weather report

If it’s going to pour rain (yes, it happens) then you’re going to want to be wearing a rain jacket and maybe some rubber boots. Have a change of clothes easily accessible for after you move in so you can start taking part in orientation activities right away!
