How to Stretch Your Dollar as a Student

Budgeting and saving money is not as hard as you think – especially for students.

Here are some things you can do to help stretch your dollar as a college student.

Give Yourself a Budget

Try limit using your credit or debit card and give yourself a weekly budget.  Food can be very expensive especially if you are purchasing it daily.  Out of your weekly budget, set aside an amount that you spend on groceries and find inexpensive and healthy recipes to cook for all of your meals.  Doing this will give you an idea of how much you should spend on what you need rather than what you want.

Look for Used Textbooks Online

In addition to tuition and living costs, purchasing new textbooks can be really expensive for you.  Many schools have Facebook groups with students selling used textbooks.  Just make sure to check with your professor first to see if older editions can be used in your class!

Take Advantage of Student Discounts

Your school’s Student Association may provide you with discounts to movie theatres, comedy clubs, sporting events, and local attractions. To save money on the gym, you can head to your school’s gym as most colleges provide free access to students. You can also take advantage of your medical and dental plan.

Buy a SPC Card

An SPC card can give you tons of discounts on products and services like clothing, electronics, and spa services to name a few. If you are hungry for take out, they have lots of discounts to restaurants as well!  You can order a card online at www.spccard.ca
